Ford: On my 03 6.0..camper..trailer..135,000 miles..turbo at 65,000…

Customer Question
On my 03 6.0 when...
On my 03 6.0 when I am under a hard pull,on a 6-7-8% hill, pulling my 4500lb camper,I will get loud poping sound like it is backfiring and the boost needle will flick to zero every time it pops, also black smoke each time. This does not happen every hill.Sometimes it will go up under full power. Never happens when I,m not pulling a trailer. 135,000 miles,Ford replaced the turbo at 65,000. Just had the egr replaced last week in Fl and hooked to a trailer yesterday in Charlotte.and the frist little hill....same thing.Got to home in Franklin and last hill about 9% never missed a beat at 3 grand in second gear. Do you know if they replaced the VGT actuator when the turbo was replaced?

I will have to call ford here in Franklin tomorrow and will let you know. Mike

Ford Mechanic: Ray M., Ford Master Tech replied 8 years ago
Okay, the reason I ask is,I have seen them break down and cause the same problem, and the rebuilt turbo from Ford doesn't come with the actuator any more.

After turbo replaced, same thing a month later when hooked to a trailer.Last summer went to yellowstone put on 8000 miles with our camper and not once did it pop
Ford Mechanic: Ray M., Ford Master Tech replied 8 years ago
If the turbo was replaced and not just the center rotating part, there is a possibilty the new one is sticking, some of them are rebuild and the bushings for the shaft to the unison ring is sticking.

what is the fix??
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
also why have I been charged twice on my debit card??
Ford Mechanic: Ray M., Ford Master Tech replied 8 years ago

The fix is to remove the turbo and replace the center rotating part with the new assy that has coated surfaces and better shaft to bushing clearance.

As for the double charge on your card, you will have to take that up with customer service,as experts have no control over that.
