No... I stopped by advanced auto... they said the computer hook-up is to old for their computer.... just thought I would try this until monday

Ford Mechanic: Eric, Automotive Repair Shop Manager replied 8 years ago

Hi,

You dont need a computer to read yours. You can retreive them yourself. You just need a length of wire to use as a jumper wire. Underther hood near the firewall you will see the data link connector. Follow directions below to retreive your fault codes, and below the directions are the fault code definitions. Once you pull them and if you have a further question on how to interpret the fault code, re-open the question and let me know the code number and we can go from there:

To extract DTCs from the computer for diagnostic purposes, the Self Test connector is used.

  1. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. If engine will not start or stalls after starting, proceed with next step.
  2. Turn the key "OFF", then wait ten seconds.
  3. Activate the self test by grounding the Self-Test Input (STI) connector.
  4. Turn the ignition key "ON".
  5. Record all codes received.
  6. Turn ignition "OFF".

Hi,

sorry, forgot how to interpret blinks of the check engine light when pulling codes:

Codes are transmitted by place value with a pause between the digits; Code 32 would be sent as 3 flashes, a pause and 2 flashes. A slightly longer pause divides codes from each other. Be ready to count and record codes; the only way to repeat a code is to recycle the system. This method may be used to read either 2 or 3 digit codes. The Continuous Memory codes are separated from the other codes by 6 seconds, a single flash and another 6 second delay.

Eric... I went out to look for the DLC....this is in the engine compartment ? Not in the cab? How big is it? Remember this is a 1993 4.0 liter six cyl... ranger...

Ford Mechanic: Eric, Automotive Repair Shop Manager replied 8 years ago

Hi,

It is in the engine compartment on the 93 Ranger.

It should be on the passenger side of engine compartment between the firewall and shock tower.

It is about 2-3" long
