Hello,

Sorry for the delay.

What exactly is is doing when shifting?

Does it seem to slip between shifts, or is it shifting real hard, etc...

It is an automatic and not changing gears all the time

Ford Mechanic: Virtual Wrench, Ford Mechanic replied 8 years ago

Thanks,

If the transmission has not been serviced in awhile, it could just be a restricted filter. Have the trans service done by a knowledgable shop and they will be able to tell you what it looked like inside and if it needs anything further.

I am assuming that you have already checked the trans fluid level, if not be sure to do that first, as it would be the most likely cause. If you have further questions feel free to reply.

Thanks for asking!

The Transmission fluid has been checked and full, but smells burnt. What does this mean? How can a car this this low of mileage have a bad transmission?
Ford Mechanic: Virtual Wrench, Ford Mechanic replied 8 years ago

Thanks,

Heat is the primary reason for the fluid to smell burnt. It doesnt usually happen with those low of miles, but we have new cars with less than that where the trans got hot and had to be rebuilt. It could have had a too tight of a clearance between the internal gears from the factioy and just developed heat from that... Sorry, but it sounds like it may need some extensive work......please dont shoot me, i'm just the messanger :-)

Best of luck my friend!

And what do you suggest that I do next? Will new or rebuilt be a better answer? Do you know appx the cost of each will be?
Ford Mechanic: Virtual Wrench, Ford Mechanic replied 8 years ago

Hi,

To be honest, i dont think you will have much luck finding a GOOD used transmission. I would have that one rebuilt. It will run around $1500 for it. Fortunatly it isnt a newer vehicle, as they can run 3000-4000 to rebuild.
