1998 Mercury Mountaineer: turn signal lights..bulbs..stereo

Customer Question

1998 Mercury Mountaineer, turn signal lights are not working. The bulbs have been checked and are not the problem. Also, stereo system lights have gone out also. My main concern is the turn signal lights. One company told us $90.00 an hour to diagnose and they could not guarantee a diagnosis in one day. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? We like the Mountaineer. It is my husband's auto to work and back and misc. hauling. It is in excellent condition other than the problem stated above. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Hello, I would like a little more information about the problem. Do the brake lights work? Do the emergency flashers work? Thanks
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
Brake lights work, but flashers do not. Thanks for any help you can give us.

Ok, lets start by checking fuses 10 and 21 in the fuse box inside the car (not the one under the hood). If they are both good, then I would like for you to try something. Turn the emergency flashers off and on about 30 times as fast as you can. Push the button down hard and let it snap back up. These switches are known for getting gummed up and causing the signals and flashers to stop working. Thanks

Still working on this problem...But I tried turning flashers on and off for more than 30 times. With the steering wheel in the upper most position-flashers work now. But turn signals do not. Could this be the multi-function switch?

Thanks for your input

Yes, if the switch flipping got the flashers to work, then chances are that the multifunction switch has failed. Here are the instructions. If the pictures do not load, I will send them right after. Thanks

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable

  1. Remove the ignition
    switch lock cylinder

(1)Insert the ignition key into the ignition
switch lock cylinder
and turn to RUN position.
(2)Push the ignition
switch lock cylinder
release tab with a punch while pulling out the ignition
switch lock cylinder.

  1. If equipped. twist the tilt wheel handle and shank counterclockwise and

  1. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.

(1)Remove the screws.
(2)Remove the upper and lower steering column

  1. Remove the multi-function switch.

(1)Remove the screws.
(2)Disconnect the electrical connectors.
(3)Remove the multi-function switch.
