2008 Ford Escape Hybrid: 000 miles..the highway at about 65 MPH..pull

Expert's Assistant chatimg
Customer: I am reading a post from Mike from 245 days ago that sounds like our problem. We also have a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid with 60,000 miles. My husband was driving on the highway at about 65 MPH when he got an alert to pull over safely and turn the car off. The powertrain light came on and stayed on. He could start the car again if turned the car off and put the transmittion in park. Once he started again, it did the same thing in a matter of 15 minutes, then again 5 minute later. He is now fully broken down. The powertrain light has come on intermitantly over the past 2 months. We took it to a ford dealership to have it looked at and at the time the light was off and they said the had no issue when scanning the system for codes. Any help wold be great as it is on the way back to the same ford that didn't properly diagnosis the first time.
Thanks, Kate

Hello and Thank you for choosing Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be helping you with your question today.

Yes, there have been a few problems with the Ford Escape Hybrids, specifically the Electronic Throttle Bodies or ETB going bad causing the pull over safely message and the no start condition. There also more than likely is a computer update for the cars computer system to help with other misc. concerns.

Customer
Would this be related to the powertrain light intermittently going on and off over the past months? Why also aren't any codes stored by the system the light goes off so a technician can detect was the issue was vs. saying there is nothing wrong now. Is there a manual inspection that can also be completed to confirm that a major powertrain failure hasn't occured?

If the light goes on and off there should be no reason why there are no codes in the memory. An electrical inspection with a scan tool to compare the Throttle body data to data supplied by Ford needs to be checked to verify the problem.

Customer
Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX question, do you know if the computer or software update would be covered under the powertrain warranty?
It very well should be covered under the warranty.
Customer
Sorry, to bother you one more time. Just to confirm, the Escape computer system should have logged error codes each time the Powertrain light came on. I am asking as the last technician that looked at this in February before it broke down said "no codes in any modules found". At this point, the powertrain light had gone on about 2-3 times over a 21 day period....and went on a total of 10-12 times of 3 months before it broke down today. I'd also like to know about any other tests (manual reviews) that could help find an issue if there were no codes. Example: at the same time we took this car in the breaks were skipping between 5-15 miles per hour. We took the car in 3 times and all technicians said "there is nothing wrong with you car". We found on a blog to manually look at the toner rings as one or more were likely cracked. We took it back, 2 were cracked and the problem no longer exists. I am starting to worry that this car computer system is not functioning properly and Ford doesn't train anyone on how to manually inspect certain issues when the error code doesn't show up.

Thank you,
Kate
If there are no codes, which there should be. Unfortunally there is no tests that can be done manually as there is no starting point. A code would give the tech a starting point to diagnosis the problem.
