1997 f250/7.3l diesel alternator not charging how do I test.

Resolved Question:

1997 f250/7.3l diesel alternator not charging how do I test. I charge the batteries up with a battery charger to start the truck ,if I turn the heater on in the truck the batteries discharge .

The way to check a alternator is with a volt meter.Test it at the power wire on the alternator and ground.The alternator should charge between 13.6 volts and 14.5 volts.If any lower the alternator is bad.Also wait about 1 min to test when started because it will give you a low reading when the glow plugs are still working.When the glow plugs cut off it will send the voltage back.
