1999 ford escort zx2: stalls when you..torque converter

Resolved Question:

I have a 1999 ford escort zx2 and the transmission isnt shifting right and it stalls when you put it in gear and when you stop. Do you think it is the torque converter or something else?

While it is possible for this symptom to be caused by a mechanically "stuck on" torque converter clutch, it is also possible that there is an electronic problem causing the converter clutch to be held "on". So, begin by checking the transmission fluid condition, see if the fluid is dark and smells burnt, or if it appears clean and reddish as it should. If it is dark and smells burnt, you may already have internal damage to the converter or other hard components regardless of the original cause. Next, have the codes scanned, see if there are any codes related to transmission concerns. We can proceed for there. Steve
