2002 Ford Explorer Sport: fan speed only works on 4 (high)

Customer Question

My 2002 Ford Explorer Sport has no heat, also the fan speed only works on 4 (high). Is there a control device that regulates the heat.

The device that regulates the heat is called the blend door actuator. It is an electric motor device that positions a flap door inside the heater case, allowing a variable amount of heat to mix with the air flowing through. There are plastic gears inside the blend door actuator that sometimes fail. You may hear a clicking or thumping noise when that happens.

The fan speed is a separate issue. It is controlled by a set of resistors called the blower motor resistor. If this fails, you will still have high speed because the resistor is bypassed on high.
