My 1997 ford escort "service engine soon" light came on. I replaced the gas cap, and reset the code, but within 48 hours the. "service engine soon" light came back on (code p1443). The car has 113,000 miles on it - any ideas of what would be the next likely suspicious component?

Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer. Check the operation of the canister purge solenoid and the purge flow sensor first. To do this, locate the line going to the charcoal canister. Remove it so it's open to the atmosphere. Use a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM) to monitor the voltage on the purge flow sensor on the Blue/Pink (BL/PK) wire. Then with the engine running at about 2000 RPM, use a jumper wire to ground the Orange/White (O/W) wire at the canister purge solenoid.

With the solenoid grounded, there should be good air flow through the hose and the purge flow sensor voltage should increase by 1-1.5v from what it started at. If the flow is good but voltage does not change as it should, replace the purge flow sensor.

If grounding the solenoid does not open it and create good air flow through the hose, verify the integrity of the hoses and replace the canister purge solenoid as needed.
