what causes a 1990 ranger 2.9 4x4 to stall when in gear and clutch is released and when in neutral if the clutch is released the truck will start to move.

Sounds like you have shifter linkage issues internllay in the trans or the 1st gear sychronizer or fork is holding the gear engaged. This means the trans needs to be dropped and disassembled for inspection.
