2000 navigator: 5.4 L, 137..oil pressure..low rpm..needle..indicators

Resolved Question:

vehicle - 2000 navigator with 5.4 L, 137,000 miles

problem - oil pressure appears to come and go at 10 second to 2 minute intervals at idle or low rpm (i won't drive)

symptoms - idiot light and needle simutaneously on or off. needle doesn't waiver - either at about 3/4 or zero. also can hear pump click when indicators say no pressure.

apparently started with top off of 2 1/2 quarts cheap 10W-50.

attention so far-changed oil twice, once with a flush over I day period.
pan gets warm as if oil is circulating.

questions - is this pump electrical or mechanical?
can either one be on and off as seen?
are my guages an absolute indicator of my circulation?
are these guages on eletrical sensors or a live oil line?

I really hate to take it in and pay for experimental diagnosis - I think that this can be thought out!

Hello. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be glad to assist.

The oil pressure sending unit is a common failure on these engines.

I would start by replacing the sending unit next to the oil filter.

If you have a oil pressure gauge, you could test the oil pump.

The oil pump is mechanical.

Thanks, I'm in the process of replacing the sending unit. I'll hope that will test my pressure.

in the event that the pump is bad, is it possible to remove the pan and access it without lifting the engine?

The oil pump takes 13 hours to replace. Let hope the sending unit fixes your concern.
