My CX 998 just broke down, the resistance suddenly lifted all the way and is stuck in that position

Depending on which version you have is how it is calibrated.
try holding the fan button in for 10 seconds and if the screen changes hit the lowest level and it should start to calibrate the incline. If that doesn't work hit the display button for 10 seconds and do the same thing. If it wont calibrate you will need to replace the whole lift motor.

i have just recieived the lift motor and can't seem to remove the piece that holds it in place

Try removing the bottom screw and turning the screw by hand to unjam it.

There is a steel shaft or pin that holds the motor that i don't know how to release, it has a flat surface on either side and passes through the top of the motor.
