I have an old remington single shot 22 rifle looking for answers. Been told it is a model 1 , cant confirm because of no model number on the unit. i believe it is a rolling block because a lever that after you pull back hammer , pulls open the breach. it has alever for break down, octogon barrell, barrell is 22 inches long, over-all length is 37 inches. on the barrell there are some stamp marks under the forend: appears to be a W then closer to the breach end is the letter H within a circle and maybe a Y then a very small hole then another H without the circle. serial number starts with J 275XXX. Reminton trade mark 22 short or long on topand side on barrell behind adjustable rear sight remington arms-union metalic cartridge co. reminton works, ilion, new york, u.s.a. it may or may not be a model 1 i dont really know. hopefully you can tell me just what i have. its a long story but i am desparate need of a stock set. thanks XXXXX XXXXX XXX-XXX-XXXX

It sounds like you have a Remington No.4. This is the only model that is in .22 cal and has a 22" barrel. Here is a great source to get a new stock:

can you date the rifle based on serial number?

Unfortunately, It appears that Remington did not keep very good records of the serial numbers in those years. I have not seen and setail numbers released for these rearly Remingtons.
