I receive VA widows pension, because my husband died of war

Customer Question

I receive VA widows pension, because my husband died of war related illness. My brother just passed away and left me his estate. Will I lose my VA benefits because of inheritance?
Also I receive social security,I am retired. Will inheritance effect this?

The widow's pension is based on income, not assets. So as long as your inheritance is paid as a lump sum and not as income, it should not affect your benefits. And Social Security is not based on income or assets. So unless you actually get SSI, your Social Security benefits will not affected. Do you have any other questions?

Correction: assets are considered in determining eligibility for the widow's pension. Your benefits could be affected.
