An ex-wife can collect Social Security benefits based on her ex-husband's earnings record if they were married for at least 10 years, she is at least 62 years old, and she is unmarried (it doesn't make any difference whether he has remarried or not). The ex-wife will get EITHER benefits based on her own earnings record, or one-half her ex-husband's benefit, whichever is more. This money comes out of the Social Security Fund and does not reduce the amount of the ex-husband's benefit.
