Customer Question

What are our rights, we have had our granddaughter since she was two.
We have never had guardianship of her, and she is now applying to colleges
and needs to file for financial aid. Her mother is not employed and has no
money, and does not live with us; and her so called father does not pay
child support and has not seen her but a couple of times. Does the 18
year old have any rights to saying who she wants as guardian? What do
we need to do?

Hi - my name is ***** ***** I'll be glad to assist.

Technically, once your granddaughter is 18 years old, she is an adult and doesn't need a legal guardian. That said, it may be better off for her to claim that she's independent and that her parents are not employed/don't support her in terms of getting the best types of grants and student loans out there.
