Customer Question

I will be a widow for 5 years January 26 2016 and my question is " I was getting caretakers benefit for my underage son until he turned 16 and it stopped. But he was getting SSI for dad until next month. So I was told I could get widow benefits is this true and would I get back benfits or from now on until I'm able to go on Social Sercurity?
Thanks

You can get survivor benefits if you are age eligible--if you are 60 and older, or if disabled, 50 and older and if disability started before or within seven years of your spouse's death.

You may be entitled to retroactive payments. For more information, click on the links below:

I guess my question was I'm only 55 and have been told that because I was married for almost 30 years I should be able to collect some kind of widows benefits. So can I before I turn retirement age?

Regrettably, no you cannot. You can collect when you reach age 60.
