Can the non-custodial parent keep a child of six months

That is an issue of fact for a court to decide. It is possible that the non-custodial parent would get overnight visits but since the child is 6 months and the non-custodial parent does not have a history of a close relationship, it is very unlikely that the non-custodial would get more than a few hours per day a couple of days a week until the child is at least one and has a bond with that parent.
