So, right now, this sounds somewhere between viral conjunctivitis (thin, stringy discharge that's kind of intermittent) and bacterial conjunctivitis (discharge that's thick, almost purulent, and constantly needs to be wiped away, is pretty gross). The fact that your daughter is displaying other viral-type symptoms is pushing me towards viral conjunctivitis. At this time, I'd only recommend wiping is the discharge is bothering her (with clean hands and clean cloth, of course), cleaning away crusting after sleep the same way. Lots of hand washing for you and her. Might be a good idea to avoid sharing linens with her right now, just to be on the safe side. Most viral illness go on for 5-7 days before the symptoms seems to be improving. Viral conjunctivitis can be unilateral, but the other eye may also be involved 24-48hrs later.

Viral conjunctivitis is a self-limited process. The clinical course parallels that of the common cold. While recovery can begin with days, the symptoms frequently get worse for the first three to five days, with very gradual resolution over the following one to two weeks for a total course of two to three weeks. Just as a patient with a cold can have morning coughing and nasal congestion or discharge two weeks after symptoms first arise, patients with viral conjunctivitis may have morning crusting two weeks after the initial symptoms, although the daytime redness, irritation, and tearing should be much improved.

Last note-- monitor for worsening fevers and ear pain, esp on the same side as the eye symptoms. Most ear infections come on the back end of a regular cold. Also, there's something called otitis-conjunctivitis syndrome. It's exactly what it sounds like-- ear and eye infection. That needs to be evaluated in person and treated with antibiotics.
