What does it mean when a persons eyes are dilated?

Doctor's Assistant: When was the last time you had your eyes checked? In general, how has your vision been lately?

Vision has been fine. I just noticed that my daughters eyes were a little dilated. Do I need to take her to a doctor imediately?

Hello -

It may be entirely normal for a person's eyes to be dilated, especially if it is darker in the environment. The pupil normally enlarges to allow more light and when the environment is darker, and the pupil normally gets smaller when it is brighter outside.

It would be a concern if she had unequal size pupils, or if her pupils were abnormally enlarged even if it was very bright outside.

In addition enlarged pupils in the setting of a coma, or after serious head injury would be very concerning, however this is not the case here.

So as long as everything else is fine, slight variation in the size of her pupils is not concerning, especially if it is both eyes are equal.
