I'm hoping to be pointed in the right direction, I'm so very desperate. My son is only 3 and since he was an infant has suffered from styes in both eyes... He obviously does not allow me to do warm compresses as he's very energetic, won't sit still, and has already been traumatized when going near his eyes by an ophthalmologist. It's to the point now where he is very light sensitive, and always has his right eye squinted... They had to restrain him forefully as a doctor stuck that metal tool into one of his eyes to look at the inside but it was extremely swollen... The screams from my toddler were horrific, and he just couldn't take it anymore. I just don't know what to do anymore.

Doctor's Assistant: How long have you been dealing with this? Is your eye itchy?

My son doesn't seem to have itchiness...

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Just that they have said it should go away on its own in time, but since he's been alive he has dealt with this...

Hello,

Thank you for the question. I am Dr.A.S.Desai, certified ophthalmologist and I look forward to answering this question for you.

The most common cause for recurrent styes in children in uncorrected refractive errors ( not wearing glasses for vision problems). If one of his eyes is beginning to squint then all the more reason for him to get his eye examined in detail.

I would suggest you to go to a pediatric ophthalmologist near your place as they are well trained to examine young children and know how to treat squint also. If not treated at the right time, it can lead to irreversible visual loss later(Amblyopia).

You can find a pedicatric ophthalmologist near your area by visiting this site-

https://secure.aao.org/aao/find-ophthalmologist

Hope this helps you to take the right decision. Take care.

Do remember to rate this response positively if it was up to your expectation/satisfaction. Please feel free to ask follow up questions if any.

Regards

Dr.A.S.Desai

Thank you, ***** ***** my concern should now be on the fact he's squinting AS A RESULT of the "styes" growing on his inner lids??? The specialists I've dealt with didn't see it as such a big deal---I'm so confused, so now we have an even bigger issue at hand?
Eye Doctor: Dr. A.S. Desai, Ophthalmologist replied 5 months ago

I am sorry if my answer has caused you any confusion. The answer is to caution you about some of the possibilities which might occur if left untreated. As an ophthalmologist I would be concerned if a 3 year old child had recurrent styes and had now started to squint. I would want to rule out whether the child has any spectacles error which is probably causing recurrent styes.

Take care and have a good day!

He had a vision test that he passed well not too long ago, the squinting is happening because the swollen tissue around his eye causes discomfort. What am I to do for a toddler who does not lay still to allow a warm compress on his eye? He is a very light sleeper, obviously I've tried to do this while he's asleep with no success. But I don't see how something warm on the outside of his eye will make that swelling go down inside of it. I'm so desperate to help him.
Eye Doctor: Dr. A.S. Desai, Ophthalmologist replied 5 months ago

During an acute episode of stye , a short course of oral antibiotics such as Augmentin Syrup can be given for 5 days. You can request your pediatrician for a prescription during a painful swollen eyelid infection. However in between infections there is nothing else that needs to be done except teach him not to touch his eyes repeatedly.

Being a mother myself, I can understand your difficulty in giving warm compresses. My younger daughter too had 2 episodes of stye when she was about 2-3 years of age. I remember giving her warm compresses while she slept at night. Thankfully she responded very well with that.

Take care and hope your son's stye disappears soon.
