Over the last couple of years I have had intermittent

Customer Question

Over the last couple of years I have had intermittent cacosmia
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: No
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: i have always suffered from a light headed ness which was put down to an inner ear infection . I had an MRI about 15 years ago which was fine. I had an eye test last yeay which was fine for swelling etc but recently I have noticed short term memory not as good I am 54 and had meningitis as a child
JA: How long have you been dealing with this? Is your eye itchy?
Customer: No no itchy eyes.first noted the smell about 2 years ago

Hello and welcome. I'm Dr Chip

I'm not sure what specifically is your question here--can you clarify that for me please?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I am concerned about a brain tumour as I have been experiencing cacosmia for a couple of years intermittently and my short term memory is now not as good as it was
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Am in U.K. And would prefer e mail pleas

I understand.

A few questions first please--

Any headaches?

Any vision problems?

Any vertigo or balance problems?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No real heavy headaches
Vision is fine
Have had balance problems for 20 years diagnosed as inner problem in fact that is a bit better now
Again have felt light headed at times for many years associated with the above
Had MRI about 15 years ago
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Just checking if you are still there

I understand your concern here, but a brain tumor would be unlikely for the following reasons--

This is intermittent--with a brain or olfactory nerve tumor, once the symptoms begin, they don't let up.

No constant severe headaches

No vision problems.

That isn't to say there isn't something going on here--possible sequelae from a sinus infection, diabetes, an autoimmune disorder--so you need to have your doctor check it out. I'm sure, though, that an MRI of your brain will be perfectly normal.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

It was just coinciding with the memory problem. As an example every now and then I can't get the name of a well known celebrity etc and I just seem worse at turning off lights or getting in lift and forgetting to press button etc

OK. That may be from depression, but it could be a signal of early Alzheimers

A fully battery of cognitive tests from a neurologist could check for that
