Customer Question

I have toxicity from taking chloroquine for years. I've been to 3 specialists and they all agree that I have retinal dysfunction. My cone cells are dying. So I have been struggling with night and day seeing. The only treatment will be stem cells when they are approved which could take years. I have 4 children who can't understand why I can see somethings one day but not the next. It seems my vision is very subjective due to lighting etc. I wanted to try and make something for them to wear to show them what I see. I was wondering if you had any suggestions.

This is Dr. David

I am sorry you have retinal dysfunction.

chloroquine can definitely cause retinopathy in rare cases.

your doctors should also check for autoimmune retinopathy which can be treated with steroids.

steroid therapy can sometimes help with autoimmune retinopathy.

light is very important to vision and we take light often for granted when we see.

cone cells work best in bright light.

do you see better in dim light? these are your rods which see in the dark.

I asked you a question.

do you see better in dim light? these are your rods which see in the dark.

every patient who has retinal damage sees differently

I know you want to express to your children your visual impairment.

tell me how your vision is impaired.

I can't see in dim or bright lights. I cant see the tv and when I look at people I can't see their faces. Everything I look at is spotty and blotchy. I'm also turning color blind.

chemical retinopathy can be similar to diabetic retinopathy damage to the retina from diabetes

is a video simulating vision from retinopathy

you can show your children this video and it can give them a small idea of the loss of vision that you have.
