This answer was rated:

I was refused the flu shot this year at Walgreens due to having reacted to Gentamicin ointment for the aggressive treatment of possible pink eye 20 years ago. (Hives after putting in my eye every 30 minutes during a 3 hour period in the afternoon.) I have had a flu shot every year and have had no problems. Has something changed or is this not something I should worry about and go get the shot elsewhere. I am 68 years old and recently retired from teaching Early Childhood for 36 years.

Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm Dr. Rick and I have two decades of ophthalmology experience. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

I have never heard that an allergic reaction to gentamicin is an absolute contraindication for the flu shot.

Dr. Rick :

Perhaps, because Walgreens is not really a medical office with people trained to do anything other than give out prescriptions, stick a needle in your arm and stock shelves, they do not want to deal with anyone who might have any sort of reaction.......just want to "skim the cream of the crop" in making money on the flu shot.....

Customer:

I will go elsewhere for the shot.

Customer:

Thanks

Dr. Rick :

I suggest you go to your doctor, tell her you want the flu shot and that you had this reaction to gentamycin ophthalmic ointment....and see what she says.

Dr. Rick :

I bet you can have the flu shot, but I really am not 110% sure :(

Dr. Rick :

Sounds like a good plan.

Customer:

Thanks
