I got hair dye in my eye about 10 days ago. Went to Opthomologist the next day. I was put on an eye drop prescription, then just tear drops, then off both. I have no pain but eye is somewhat more red and still watering. Was told to let it heal by itself. There was no damage according to the tests. What is causing the tearing and redness and how long will this continue?

Doctor DanB : Hello and thanks for your question. The tearing and redness are still there because, despite having used these prescription drops to help prevent infection, the irritation (conjunctivitis) that this chemical exposure causes can take a few weeks to resolve sometimes. There's no way around that sometimes--the body just has to heal itself on it's own. However, the tearing can be helped by using cool compresses and artificial tears 3-4x/day. Does that make sense?
