My son just woke up with a VERY swollen eye that hurt and has discharge. In addition, he is having trouble breathing and coughing a barky terrible sounding cough. What should I do? Strange question...what are signs of Swine Flu? We were just at a fair and I'm just not sure what's going on with him!
Doctor DanB : Hello and thanks for your question. Are you available to chat?
JACUSTOMER-wt6n3drb- :

Doctor DanB : It sounds like your son has croup which is a vital infection that can cause airway constriction. Given that you've already noticed he's having trouble breathing, I would recommend taking him to an urgent care center or emergency room as soon as possible as he may very well need help breathing and he can get into trouble quickly with this.
Doctor DanB : Does that make sense?
JACUSTOMER-wt6n3drb- :

Yes, the only odd thing is that he also has a swelled eye with mucous type discharge which is the first thing we noticed. Any relation to croup? Do you think this could wait until the morning when urgent care opens. Anything I could do for him now...cold air, etc?

Doctor DanB : The swollen eye could also be part of the viral infection that causes the croup. If he really is having trouble breathing and he has this barky cough he could be in trouble and waiting until tomorrow morning could be dangerous.

Initially when he woke up the cough was severe and his breathing was clearly restricted. Now he has calmed down and is breathing better, but not totally normally, with much less barking. If he stays like this I will likely wait until morning but will be sleeping with him to monitor. Thanks for your help!

Doctor DanB : My pleasure. Do you have any other concerns or questions about this topic?
JACUSTOMER-wt6n3drb- :

No, but if something else comes up thru the nite, will I be able to ask you then?

Doctor DanB : Absolutely. I'll write back as soon as I see anything from you (though it's possible I may be asleep too :). Good luck to you and I hope he feels better quickly.
