Resolved Question:

I am scheduled for cataract surgery April 18th 2012. I had been on Metformin for 3 years (one 500mg) each morning. I forgot to get a refill & have not been taking it for the past 4 weeks. A1c is 5.5 as of doctor visit one week I'm concerned about starting it again before this surgery after reading about lactic acidosis....should I wait to start back after surgery? I am also scheduled to have the 2nd cataract surgery within a week after first surgery if healing goes well. Thank you. Marian

Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

I would start up your metformin at the dose you are supposed to be taking it....if not your blood glucose may be too high to have your surgery on the day you are supposed to have it. There is no problem to starting it up again should not lead to lactic acidosis.

Dr. Rick :

Does this make sense to you?

Thank you...I gave you 5.7 as A1C but that is was 6.5.....I don't know if that would make a difference. I am very anxious about this surgery after reading about lactic acidosis. I am thinking about re-scheduling my sugery for next month so that I will be back on the Met for a while longer before surgery. Your feedback on this please. Thanks again. Marian

That really shouldn't make a difference. But, that being said, I agree with you. Go ahead and postpone the surgery until next month. Delaying cataract surgery will cause no issues what so ever.

That way you will be in a very positive state of mind and will feel much better knowing that your blood glucose is back on track and you are in the best possible shape for the stresses of the surgery.
