Ask an Eye Doctor and Get an Answer ASAP
Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.
The allergy pills should start to work fairly quickly. I would think you should see some improvement within 24hrs or so.
Here is a trusted source that does an excellent job of reviewing over the counter allergy eye drops:
The above article covers both oral preparations as well as drops. As you can see there are not a lot of effective OTC drops available however combining drops with oral therapy can be helpful.
As far as Rx drops Pataday, which is a stronger preparation of Patanol, is very effective in the treatment of ocular allergy symptoms.
Other Rx drops work by blocking the release of histamine from special white blood cells called Mast cells. Drops such as Crolom, Alamast, Alocril and Alomide work well but take some time to "kick in" The good thing about these drops is that they have very few side effects.
Other Rx options include various strengths of steroid preperations such as FML, Maxidex and Pred Forte. While these drops work quickly and are excellent at relieving symptoms they can have severe side effects and should only be used under careful monitoring by an ophthalmologist (MD).
When it comes to OTC choices I recommend staying away from the "get the red out" class of drops such as Visine-A, Opcon-A etc as they only last for a short time and, in the long run, just end up making things worse.
