Doctor DanB : Astigmatism is determined by convention. There are two ways to write a prescription for glasses. There is a plus convention for describing astigmatism and a minus as well. A prescription written in plus can be converted to one written in minus astigmatism; optometrists usually write their prescriptions in minus astigmatism and ophthalmologists in plus format.

ok, thanks for your answer. i been reading that having astigmatism with hyperopia can actually be kind of like a blessing for lasik because the astigmatism actually helps reduce the amount of cornia that needs to be cut. Have you heard of this before?
