Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

Are you available to chat?

Customer:

yes

Customer:

my wife is with me now, she got an eye anfection this morning. her left eye hurt, lightly swallowed, and matter coming out

Dr. Rick :

has she been around anyone with an eye infection lately? Kids?

Customer:

yes, she worked in a daycare, and kids are infected there

Dr. Rick :

Ahhh......bet she has viral conjunctivitis.

Dr. Rick :

Since this is a virus, no antibiotic drops are needed.

Customer:

what should we do?

Dr. Rick :

Antibiotics only work on bacteria....not virus'

Dr. Rick :

She should use tear replacement drops 4x/day and also as often as she likes. Cold compresses will also help.

Dr. Rick :

It is very contagious. It may spread to her other eye and you will, most likely, come down with it.

Dr. Rick :

She can still go to work as long as she washes her hands a lot and doesn't hug the kids etc a lot.

Customer:

I need a name of tear replacement drops so I can Buy it

Dr. Rick :

It will take 14 days or more to run its course....and she will be a unhappy camper until then :(

Dr. Rick :

natural tears is one name as is refresh. She could also use some lacrilube or refresh PM ointment at bedtime to soothe her eyes as she sleeps. The ointment will blur her vision since it is goopy so put it in right before falling asleep.

Dr. Rick :

Does this make sense to you?

Dr. Rick :

Are you still there?

Dr. Rick :

I guess you have stepped away from your computer.

Dr. Rick :

And, now, the obligatory word from our sponsors: :o)

what can she take for the pain?
Expert:  Dr. Rick replied 6 years ago.
The artificial tears and ice packs will help. Otherwise, just whatever OTC pain meds you have around the house.
Like I said, she will be pretty miserable while the virus runs its course. :(
