My mother in law has had chronic watering of her left eye.

Resolved Question:

My mother in law has had chronic watering of her left eye. She recently woke up with swelling at the inner lower lid of left eye and discoloration and the eye lid appears to not open well, but does not have swelling. She said she didn't hit it, but did say she was sitting out side for quite awhile, and it was windy. Wondering what it might be and how we can treat it. Thank you ***** *****

Dr. Rick :

Hi. I'm online and happy to answer your question today.

Dr. Rick :

It sounds like she may have an obstruction of her lacrimal system. The plugging of this tear drainage system would account for the chronic watering of her left eye.

Dr. Rick :

Now, it sounds like the lacrimal sac has become infected. This is a common occurrence when there is obstruction of the lacrimal drainage system.

Dr. Rick :

To treat it, for right now, I would put hot compresses on the swollen area. However, for definitive treatment she will have to be seen by an ophthalmologist. She will, most likely, require oral antibiotics. After they have taken effect and the infection under control she will need treatment to open the lacrimal system up to prevent it from getting infected again. This, of course, will also solve her chronic watering.
