If someone has the skin type of lupusand they have cataracts. Are there any special precaution that should be done before the cataract surgery If sdo what types Please have a Medical Doctor respond not a nurse or liscenssed practical nurse.
Hello and thanks for your question.
I am a cataract surgeon and have done cataract surgeries on several lupus patients. There is no special preparation or pre-operative medicine that needs to be dome or given. If the skin around the eye is very sensitive, you and your surgeon may consider using a "pirate patch" in front of the eye at night for the week after surgery instead of taping a metal shield in front of the eye as the tape on the face may irritate the skin. However, some surgeons don't feel that this nighttime protection is even necessary--thus would be something to discuss with your surgeon.
