The described picture is more suggestive of optic neuritis.
Optic neuritis is the inflammation of the optic nerve and has various causes.
It is common in multiple sclerosis(MS) which is diagnosed after a MRI.
Other causes include systemic infections leading to encephalitis/meningitis( very unlikely in your case as they produce more grave symptoms), Local eye infections like uveitis.
The treatment is Steroids- IV methyl prednisolone 250 mg 6th hourly first 3 days followed by Tab.Prednisolone 1mg/kg body weight in divided doses.
Usually visual prognosis is good unless it has been long standing and the eye has gone for optic atrophy.
For the pain you can take Tab .Paracetamol 650 mg , to be repeated 8th hourly if pain persists.
Surely you can consult your ophthalmologist again for starting the initial therapy and later change if required after the MRI report.
