The redness is likely a sign of underlying irritation and dryness, even though you may not feel it as such. Since you last wore contact lenses 5 years ago, it is no longer related to that. I recommend you use artificial tears 4-6 times a day. If doing so is inconvenient, you may see your ophthalmologist for punctal plugs which will keep the tears in your eyes longer.
