What does the swelling look like? Is there a nodule in the lid? Is there mattering? Is the entire lid red?

It sounds like she has a chalazion. This is a "cousin" of a stye. There are hundreds of glands in the eyelids. When the pores to a gland gets clogged, the gland swells (much like a pimple on the face). Rarely, when the gland is swollen it can cause the lid to become infected (the lid will turn red, swollen, and painful).

Treatment consists of lots of hot compresses. If after a week, it doesn't work or gets worse, then surgical excision is the next step. If the lid gets infected, then she would need an antibiotics.

Hope this helps and thank you.
