My grandson developed pink eyelids this past Saturday.

Customer Question

My grandson developed pink eyelids this past Saturday. Sunday is eyes were swollen and a doc in the box prescribed clariton. Monday his eyes and face were more swollen with reddish/inflammed cheeks. Seen by Pediatrican on Monday who doubled Clariton and benadryl eye drops. Woke up this morning with eyes swollen and totally shut.(eye lids cannot be seen). Called Ped office and they suggested Clariton and Advil. She was told it may take a couple of days. His eyes this evening are still swollen shut and face swollen.

The prior Thurs. evening when they returned they found their apartment BR ceiling had been sprayed with appliance spray paint and the empty cans left in the downstairs BR which the kids frequent. The apartment reeked of paint odor.

Concerned that steroid drops etc. may be necessary at this point.

Can you provide me some additional information?

1. How old is your grandson?
2. Any of his siblings affected, even slightly, in a similar way?
3. Has he had a cold or even a cough in the past couple of weeks?
4. Any secretions coming from the eyes?
5. Has he visited an ophthalmologist yet?

These answers will help me better evaluate his case....

He was 5 yrs this past Feb. His 3 yr brother was not effected in any way by the paint incident nor were the parents. The entire family has been suffering from severe colds that seemed viral at first with the father then developing a bacteria infection. The 5yr old with the swollen eyes did have a bad cold. He developed hives after one dose of myxocillin (sp?) last week and it was stopped. . The mother also told me he had developed spots under his ears last week that are now back and he also has a rash behind his knees. There are no secretions from his eyes lthough they are so closed and tight that who knows what's inside. He has not visited an ophthalmologist yet. The boys did spend a great deal of time in the basement of a house they are thinking of buying last Friday.l

Thanks for the additional information. Allergic conjunctivitis is a possibility; however, given the history you have provided, a viral conjunctivitis and even a superimposed bacterial infection cannot be ruled out. In my opinion, he should see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. You may even want to consider a visit to the ER tonight to see the ophthalmologist on call.

Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can cause severe inflammation and damage to the vision. Antibiotic drops may be indicated immediately. Also steroids would not be prudent in the setting on an infection. I do not mean to alarm you but, in this situation, there is no substitute for a complete eye exam by an ophthalmologist and given his age I would not take any risks.

Good Luck as you deal with this difficult situation...
