My mother died a...

My mother died a couple weeks ago. my stepfather doesn't get along with my sister or my brother, and he left for another state before my mother died. he came back after her death, and he signed her house over to me. he closed out her checking and savings account and got two cashiers checks, payable to him, which he signed and gave to me to split between me, my brother and my sister. (The checking and savings account were in his name, my mothers name, and my name.) Today i went to the bank which wrote the checks and they do not want to cash them because they are payable to my stepfather (but he signed them and gave them to me). Can they do that?

I'm in NY state, but the property and bank account are in Pennsylvania. My stepfather has left the state again and is unavailable to go to the bank.

I have the two signed checks, and the deed to the house.

No. that's my question. can the bank refuse to pay out signed cashier's checks?

I would try this next and go record the deed here.Those would be your next steps.
