My mother lived with a man (not married) that died last

my mother lived with a man (not married) that died last Sept. He made my mother Beneficiary on a bank account and a annuity. The nursing home facility is trying to collect the debt on his time in the nursing home. At the time he was living this gentlemen gave my mother power of attorney because his communication skills were compromised. They now have doubled the amount that they first stated was due.
The main question is she liable for the debt he has accrued?
