You are correct as to the power of attorney. That power ended when he died. You can go to the probate court and file to be the personal representative of the estate. The PR can take charge of all the assets of the estate including the remains.

How you want to handle things depends on the value of any estate. If you go to the probate court take your birth certificate and the death certificate.
