You can give money as prizes, as most people would take money over a trophy. I think it depends on if you want to make it an annual or regular event. If you plan on making it an ongoing event, then you may want to have a trophy for the first place winner, and cash prizes going to all of the winners, of course the first place being the largest. You could also pull together prizes in lieu of money, for example, we would contact local business, and in exchange for adding their name to the event (on flyers, banners or tables at the event) they would give us gift certificates or cards for their business to use as the prize. You'll want to be sure it's something that can be split amongst a group, so if you know each group is 8 people, then you will need that many gifts, etc. This is a great way to get local businesses involved in your cause.
