For a hospital here in LA. Three years back our department
I am Respiratory Therapist for a hospital here in LA. Three years back our department got outsourced to save the hospital money. Out of 80 therapist working for the hospital at the time, 15 of us got retained. The new outsourced company kept us to train the new Therapist coming aboard. The only downfall was that my pay went from $36/hr to $22/hr. After two years working for this new outsource company my hourly went to $30/hr, but for some of co-workers their pay stayed the same ($22/hr-$24/hr). In the beginning of this year the hospital wanted to get back their Respiratory department, which they did. They retained mostly everyone that currently worked for the outsourced company and all of the old retained Therapist, under one condition, that our pay stays the same. We all agreed to it, assuming that now as a Hospital employee, union will fight for our wages to increase and be up to par with the surrounding hospitals. ($34/hr-$36/hr). Till this day, that hasn't happened. Many Therapist have quit. Desperate for Therapist, the hospital started a new grad program to fill the demand. So now we have 20+ fresh out school new grades, which we (retained) train. We love the fact new grades are getting the opportunity to work and help us out, but their starting pay is $34/hr.
