We have recently hired an new Executive Director for a
Hi We have recently hired an new Executive Director for a non-profit agency in NYS. She had a 3 month probation period and was mentored during that time by the agency's founder/ prior ED. This seemed like an effective way to proceed because the founder had worked with the search committee to select this new ED and the founder actually fought to hire this person. The probation was not extended because the new ED had requested a week's vacation and this could not be honored while one is on probation. However, it was made clear to her that the mentoring meetings would continue. During the probation there were several clear issues of a lack of understanding of the agency's mission, ineffective manner of communicating with staff, desire to make numerous changes without proper review and knowledge, etc. All of these issues were discussed with new Ed and there was little positive acknowledgement of a need to improve on her part. Once the probation was lifted, she left on a 9 day vacation without leaving anyone in senior management in charge in her absence. Our agency is a 24/7 operation [homeless shelters for families] and there are frequently issues that require senior management intervention. In addition, this new ED has spoken to one staff about another, has spoken negatively to one board member about another Board member and exhibits poor judgment in her first assignment more than three months ago was to hire a case manager for two of our residences [this is a compliance issue with NYS regs for shelters] and she has not yet done so - she has not yet begun the interviewing process for this position. … read more
