Good evening,

Congratulations on your nearly 30 years on the job. I'm sorry to hear of the difficulties you are having. Unfortunately, very few private companies provide any type of retire plan, so it is up to the individual employees to do what is best for their future, although depending on a person's economic circumstances, saving for retirement isn't always possible. Regrettably, the only thing the government is going to offer would be social security (when you are eligible to apply) and very low income persons may qualify for programs such as SNAP (food stamps). There may be local organizations/agencies that can also help lower income persons with things like help in paying rent or their utilities, for example (applicants typically must apply and show proof of income/assets).

If you give me a better idea on what specifically the type of government programs you are interested in, I could tell you whether there are any such programs available.

I applied for a opening at my job about a year and a half
I applied for a opening at my job about a year and a half ago and was denied the promotion. The job was posted internally and externally. I did not get the promotion and a female co-worker got the position who had more experience than me. We recently had three positions come open that were the same position I applied for a year and half ago. I applied again and was not chosen for the job. Of the three candidates I have more time doing the same job and more education then 2 of the three employees. Also the requirements for the job slightly differed form a year and a half ago. This job description was worded so that the applicants did not have to currently hold a position that was a prerequisite for the position but merely stated that that had to be doing the level of work of the stated position. One of the candidates that got the position would not have been able to apply if this changes was not made. Is this legal.. … read more
