Am I required to pay money back to a company that I used to work for that was due to an accounting error (change in payroll) 2 months after the company laid me off?

Unfortunately, you are required to pay that back to them even though it was there in error that caused the overpayment. Legally speaking, if you kept the money they could sue you for unlawful conversion of funds, which basically means you were first rightfully given the funds but once both parties realize it was a matter of error you had a duty to return the funds to them. In most cases employers will allow these to be paid back through payment plans and without any penalty, which they're not owed any penalty under law in any event.
