I am a lead technician with one assistant. My assistant has a physical disability. My assistant's performance meets neither quality nor quantity standards. My assistant has told my supervisor that I sent him texts threatening to fire him (which I do not have the authority to do), saying I don't think he can do the work because of his disability, and mocking his disability. Naturally, he could not produce the texts because I didn't send any. What should I do about this? My spouse says I should go to HR immediately.

You can report to HR. HR can look to accomodate but does not need to sacrifice performance. It is better to avoid termination and find an accomodation - other work assistant can do.
