Both iPhone and google browser

I haven't tried any since I think iit is signaling some kind of problem

The ~ symbol in Mail signifies that messages from that particular account failed to download during the last synchronization. You can click Mailbox -> Synchronize all accounts to try again; if it still doesn't work, it may indicate a temporary issue with your mail provider.
