No Chris I didn't find anything wrong - I had already checked that site out much earlier in the day. Last night I just gave up in frustration. I just switched my computer on today and my in-box is flooded with google alerts - am so relieved but have no idea what caused the problem

That is good news. My best guess in that case would be something was wrong on googles end yesterday. I checked for this but nothing was publicly announced however in the past I have seen google have issues with services and not say anything about and then it just works again so my guess is that is what happened.
