How did you conclude that you ar enot getting attachments from one address? The person sending these attachments may not be attaching them correctly (if they are not tech savvy)?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I am the one sending them from one e-mail address to another. I can retrieve them from Shaw web-mail but when they arrive in Windows Live the attachments are gone. I have had others send the same attachments and they are coming through

Sorry i didn't see that. I have already tried this and it did not fix the problem

What type of file is it and how big is it?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Did you look at the bottom of the message to see if attachments are there?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
The size does not matter or format does not matter. PDF, EXCEL, WORD DOCS. I send them and they are not attached. Someone else sends them and they are attached. No, they are not on the bottom
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Can you send the attachment to the same address from where it is being sent, using the same client and see if they are available there?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

And can you open the message which loses the attachments and press CTRL f3 and take a screen shot of it and send it to me here?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I just tried it from the sender to the sender and the attachment was there.
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

which email client is it from which you are sending and what type of account is it? Outlook/Exchange? If you do CTRL F3 on that message in live mail, you will see the Content-Type which if it is TNEF-encoding is peculiar to Outlook and Exchange Client. It's only used when Outlook is configured to use its own RTF format, which allows for various sorts of interactivity like responding to meeting requests. It's intended for the corporate environment and shouldn't be used for general email unless the sender knows that the recipient will be using Outlook to read the message.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I am sending from Outlook to Windows Live Mail. I have been sending e-mails with attachments from one to the other for over 5 years without issue. When i hit CTRL F3 it comes up with a window that says message source with a whole bunch of coding
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Can you paste the code here? I need to see the Content-Type field.

2016? Does that help?
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Do the following on Outlook 2016.

  1. Click the File tab, click Options, and then click on Mail.
  2. In the Compose in this message format list, click Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.

Then send the message with attachments.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Its already on HTML
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

The source code says "application/ms-tnef" which means, these are being sent using application/ms-tnef.

If you read Microsoft's official documentation on this, only WLM is not designed to view attachements sent in tis format.

I think TNEF is being applied service wide through your server? Is this an exchange account?

The only problem is that this has worked for 5 years and people on the same server and version of Outlook can send them to me and i receive them.

I beleive you and being a tech i need to follow MS Docs as well, there may be an update somewhere which may have caused this. Can we do a remote session?

it still doesn't make sense that it would be from one particular address and that e-mails sent from the same Exchange / Outlook are coming through.
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

No worries.

We need to change the content-type.

If you read this thread, you will understand and it will make sense.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/livemail-email/windows-live-mail-deleting-attachments-from-a/9b230e4c-d8b2-4461-b971-19fc43885fca

Last thing we can do is try sending the attachment by changing the formatting to plain-text through the compose window on outlook.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

I would also suggest clearing up the auto-complete list on Outlook (if its ok):

Go to File Options Mail Send Messages section.Click Empty Auto-Complete ListAfter clearing the auto-complete list, from the compose window make sure plain text is selected, and then try to send the message. If this doesn't work, you will need to speak to your IT Administrator to get them to change the format, if he doesn't understand you can refer him to the link i sent.

So as you can see from the source of this message, it doesn't contain the proprietary TNEF format.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Which makes it more clear,

the previous message is using the TNEF format which WLM cannot read and will never be able to read because of it's design.

the message source you sent now is using the correct formating.

Ok, i will have to take this up with the IT owner of the Outlook its being sent from. What I still don't understand thought is how two emails send from the same version of Outlook can use two different formats?
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Version doesn't matter, it's a setting.

one outlook may be configured or pushed by exchange (if it is exchange) and the other is not.

Do you want to try a few more methods i know of to change the format?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Sure, as long as i can change it back if i have to.

If we empty the auto complete list on Outlook, will it be a problem?

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Kind of yes. I have been building it for years.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I'm not sure how this will fix the issue...
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Okay.

Auto Complete list may have preferences stored to use tnef format.

I have a work around, can you create a gmail address and we forward it to your live mail address, then the auto complete list method can be avoided.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

Means, we create a new gmail address (which wont be in the auto complete list), when we send to this new gmail address, it will forward to live mail address, so any new setting we do will be effective on the new address.

Ask Your Own Email Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
ok. let me try
Email technician: Kamil Anwar, Exchange & Email Consultant replied 7 months ago

dont send immediately after creating the new address, let me know when you have created a new address and forwarded it, so we can do the other settings as well or it will be saved in the auto complete list and retain current preferences.
