JA: Who is your email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, etc.)?
Customer: Outlook
JA: How do you access your email most often? On a phone or tablet, or through a web browser?
Customer: lap top
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Checked the Modum twice at the shop
JA: Anything else you want the Email Expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: The messages leave the outbox. When the same laptop is connected to the server at work it behaves perfectly. When installed at home it only receives but does not send. I have tried substituting the modum with a 'dongle- same result - no sending!

No thanks - just advise me

In this case, I suggest you to change outlook outgoing server port number to 587.

Open outlook, Click Tools--Account settings and then find your account properties.

Go to Advanced and change outgoing server port number to 587.

And click OK.

What version of outlook are you using? outlook 2010 or 2016 or other.

In outlook 2010,2013,2016:

Choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

Click File tab, click Info and then Account settings, Account properties, Advanced and change the number and click OK.

For outlook 2007:

In Outlook, choose Tools > Account Settings
