Well it has always worked until this morning. I have a Mac and use Outlook. When I start up Outlook it opens with all my e-mail and then attempts to retrieve new e-mail. At that point it shuts down with a message that it has encountered a problem
JA: How long has this been an issue?
Customer: First time was today
JA: How do you access your email most often? On a phone or tablet, or through a web browser?
Customer: I use a MAC desktop and get my e-mail VI's Spectrum road runner
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I turned off the computer and restarted
JA: Anything else you want the email expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: Not that I can think of

Well I have tried 4 times and it just says Outlook has encountered a problem and must shut down. I just restarted Outlook and this time it did not shut down but is not retrieving new messages. I am thinking it may be a problem with my mail provider

- Click the "General" tab

what is this syntax error

As I mentioned in the chat box, the problem is that you had two periods in the email address that you were sending out.

IE:

***@******.*** is a working email format

[email protected] is not a valid format

As of right now, all is working. Is there anything else that I can help with?

After running a rebuild on the profile, all is working now.

But that syntax error has been there for around a month so why would it just now create a problem or were there other issues?

That syntax error was not the problem. The problem is that the profile was corrupt. That is why I repaired the profile by rebuilding it.

What fixed the problem today was the rebuilding.

One last question how did it get corrupt

There is no way to pinpoint what caused the corruption. More often than not, the culprit is just a random error that occurred by chance. In short, sometimes it just happens.
